How Hybrid System becomes Backup Source of Power

What is a Hybrid System?

The hybrid system, also called Hybrid power, are various combinations of different technologies to produce electricity. These power plants variably contain renewable sources of energy, which is balanced via the second form of energy, for example, diesel, battery storage system, etc. Hybrid systems exhibit discrete dynamic behavior- a system that encompasses a large class of operations within its structure.

In simpler words, the Hybrid power system is best described as a combined power and energy storage system. A few examples of power producers that are used in hybrid power are photovoltaics, wind turbines, and other engine-generators. The hybrid system combines two or more systems of electricity generation using different renewable technologies.

What is a Backup Power System?
Backup power is usually defined as any device that supplies instantaneous, uninterruptible power. The term uninterruptible power supply is often referred to as systems that provide A/C Power or about systems that work not more than 30 to 60 minutes.
These backup power systems are recruited in cases where power loss significantly results in a reduction of productivity or financial loss.
Some applications for backup power include telecommunications systems, information technology, and computer systems, utility substations, and railway applications.

Usage of Hybrid power systems with renewable energy sources:
Hybrid power systems are used for energy production for the conventional electrical distribution systems that are not connected, for example, distribution systems for isolated islands, villages, houses.
For a thorough supply of telecommunication, research laboratories, and other workstations as these power supply systems are more powerful and responsible.
These hybrid power systems are used as a backup source of power, as it produces a sustainable amount of energy which increases sustainability and energy efficiency.

What are the different types of Produced Energy?
  1. Thermal: Thermal energy can be used for heating purposes and also for warming water. The usage of solar thermal collectors, which allocates geothermal energy can be used as a backup for power supply.
  2. Mechanical: Each turbine generates mechanical energy, which is converted to electrical. Mechanical energy can be consumed directly, for example, by pumping water.
  3. Electrical: Any form of electrical energy can be converted and distributed to another type. It can be stored and consumed when it is needed.
  4. Light: Through the usage of a concentric collector and an optic cable, it can provide daylight in buildings and multiple complexes.

Why do we need a backup source of power?
In areas where regular blackouts are experienced, the hybrid power system can be an ideal solution. These hybrid systems can be programmed automatically to generate backup when an electricity failure is identified.
Enabling regular backup usage to ensure that it is maintained when a blackout occurs.
Recharge of different batteries can be done when a backup is installed and ready to use.

Here’s a diagram explaining the process of Hybrid power system:

Notes:
  1. To reduce the dependency on the main power lines, hybrid systems can be a significant source of power backup by subsiding the daily loads.
  2. Incapable of charging a battery bank due to overcast weather, these hybrid power systems can be programmed to auto-start a Genset from the grid to top up the battery bank.
  3. All kinds of in-house equipment can be recharged efficiently for modern conveniences in a standard home
